  • For more than a thousand years pilgrims have made the journey to this Gothic structure, one of the largest in Europe and distinguished for containing the longest nave and total length of any of the competition. The original, nearby site for a place of worship was established in 642. The present-day structure was begun in 1079; additions and remodeling continued for five centuries. The cathedral figures in English history, as the burial place for many medieval kings. Its literary associations include novels by Anthony Trollop and Jane Austen and Izaak Walton ("The Compleat Angler"), who are buried here.

  • Calling this a villa may be deceptive - it's more like a small town that the emperor built as a place of refuge from Rome. Hadrian had traveled widely and had an eye for design himself. So it's not surprising that his villa, built between 120-130 CE, contained marble theaters, baths, and temples and was furnished with original art and pieces that reproduced great works the emperor had seen. The villa is located near Tivoli, some 18 miles outside the capital.
